Mark Evans

Mark is Course Director of the Music School of Douglas Academy, one of the 4 Centres of Excellence in Music in Scotland.  He has been director of the Strathendrick Singers since 2009.

He studied music at Glasgow University where he gained an interest in Russian and Baltic music. He added a PGDE in music teaching and subsequently taught English in Lithuania for 2 years.  Ass well as teaching English, he spent time researching the music of that country and studying choral conducting at the Lithuanian Music Academy.  Mark continued his research on his return to Scotland and regularly visits the Baltic region.

Mark was the first Alexander Gibson Conducting Fellow with the RSNO Chorus, working with Christopher Bell and has since worked with the chorus on many occasions.  He enjoys working with young voices and is deeply involved with the National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS) as director of the Edinburgh and Stirling Area Choirs.  He is currently the conductor of the NYCOS Girls Training Choir, the NYCOS Training Choir and has worked with the NYCOS Chamber Choir. Most recent performances with these groups (pre-covid) included a performance of Mahler 3 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, a production of La Boheme with the Teatro Regio Turino, at the Edinburgh International Festival, conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and performing for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the ceremony marking the 20^th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament.

He is often asked to adjudicate at festivals and competitions and has particularly enjoyed working for the Royal National Mod in recent years (trying to learn Gaelic!)  He serves on the Board of the Scottish Music Centre.

Mark lives in Dunblane with his wife and 3 children.
